Although Japan eventually gave up the Liaodong Peninsula, it asked the Qing government to redeem it for 30 million taels of silver (during the First Sino-Japanese War,Japan looted 230 million taels of silver), which was later used mainly for military development. But the Japanese had the advantage, and their artillery, fired from concealed positions, neutralized the Russian artillery. Afraid of being surrounded, Zasulich ordered a retreat to Liaoyang.
